SEO Checklist

Here is a crash course in SEO, made from a detailed checklist on how to best optimize your site for search engines:

Keyword Research

  • Find a list of relevant keywords with high monthly search volume (and low competition if possible)
  • Map these keywords to pages you already have or plan to create

 

Onsite Optimization

  • Install Google Analytics
  • Set up Google Webmaster Tools
  • Install Bing Webmaster Tools
  • Link Google Webmaster Tools with Google Analytics
  • Create a robots.txt file
  • Create a sitemap.xml
  • Submit Sitemaps to Bing and Google Webmater Tools (reoccurring)
  • Make sure URLs are Human Readable (and includes targeted keywords)
  • Write unique meta title and description tags for each webpage
  • Check H-Tag Structure (only one H1 and at least one H2 – Include Targeted Keywords)
  • Try to make all content’s link-depth to a maximum of 3 clicks
  • Make sure internal linking is using anchor texts with keywords (of the site its linking too) in it
  • Make sure all images have ALT Descriptions and name image files with a phrase describing it
  • Implement canonical tags
  • Make sure you have a consistant redirects from non-www to www-pages
  • Implement 301 redirects from moved or broken pages

 

Content

  • Make sure targeted keywords are being used when you’re SEO Writing
  • Ensure all pages have at least 300 characters (400 – 800 preferred)
  • Make sure their is no duplicate content (on or off site)
  • Make as multimedia rich as possible (video, images, etc)
  • Implement relevant Schema and Semantic Markup
  • Implement LSI Keywords
  • Link Google Authorship Tags

 

Off Page

  • Post links to content (keywords in anchor text when possible, but not all the time)
  • Build links through social media
  • Build likes through press releases
  • Build links through QA Sites (Chacha, yahoo answers)
  • Build links through infographic sites
  • Build links through local directories (Google Local, Bing Local, etc)
  • Build links through professional networks (BBB, linked in)
  • Build links though video sites
